When to start the campaign after submitting the precampaign summary?

Hello,

I've came across a statement which says that we need to submit our precampaign summary report at least a week before we start the campaign in the Sudent Guide.

I would like to ask if Google will reply to our submission to indicate when we can start the campaign?
Or do we just start the campaign a week after the submission?

From our team's experience, Google did not reply to the submission. We were instructed to start our campaign without further notice. I'm sure Jamie will be able to give you an official answer.

Hi Kay,

Following up on your post, you must submit your campaign report no later than one week before starting your campaign. Google will record when you submitted your report, but there will no reply from Google.

Jamie: Many of the teams in my subject have been caught by the seeming lack of insistence that the Pre-Campaign Strategy must be submitted one week BEFORE starting the campaign. Below is what I wrote to one of my best teams in reply to their suggestion that the word must needs to be added

Hi XYZ: I guess you are referring the Assessment Details page.

In this document it says 'should' ...

  • The Pre-Campaign Strategy should be submitted to professors and to Google before the team start their campaign.
  • The Post-Campaign Summary should be submitted to professors and to Google within 3 weeks after their campaign has ended and must be with Google before the 14th of June 2008.
  • The reports should be uploaded in one of the following formats - Word Document (.doc), PDF (.pdf) or Rich Text Format (.rtf)
  • Teams should refer to the student guide (http://www.google.com/onlinechallenge/student_guide.pdf) for more detail on structuring their reports.

In the Student Guide, it states as follows on p. 7:
Meet with your business and write your Pre-Campaign Strategy. To be successful in the Challenge, you will need to understand what the business does and what it hopes to achieve from online marketing. Allocate time to meet with them, write your Pre-Campaign Strategy and submit it to your professor and Google before you start your campaign. (Instructions on how to submit your reports to Google will be provided to your professor).

You are right though ... it does not state MUST as I did in my posts.

But there's the problem ... just so much to read, and act on, in so short a time. I will ensure that this matter is remedied in Google documentation. I will be suggesting that it is relaxed for this iteration.

In the experience that Jerry Flatto and I had this semester---- the timing on the Google challenge is very tight. Incorporating this as an "extra" assignment into another class, such as advertising presents a lot of challenges. The requirements for uploading the pre-campaign summary one week before--- and still trying to carve out three consecutive weeks (with Spring Break falling somewhere in between)--- it's a difficult situation.

I'm not sure of a solution--- we have had some students say the campaign should actually run longer, as by they got the hang of what they were supposed to do, the contest was over. But at the same time--- the additional weeks of pre-campaign summary (as well as trying to give them time to secure a company, do all the background work necessary)---- it's all quite challenging. I am curious how other professors have managed to work this into a spring semester schedule.

I concur with Deidre that the timing of the Google challenge is very tight, especially when there are so many other things to cover in a course besides this project. Our semester ran from January 7 until May 2. The following is how I incorporated the challenge into the semester.

• January 17 - Students divided into teams.
• January 17 to February 20 – Teams recruit a business.
• February 20 - March 3 - Teams work with the business to structure an online marketing campaign by developing the Pre-Campaign Strategy. Two weeks of course instruction on search engine marketing was provided during this time frame.
• March 3-7 – Spring Break
• March 7-12 – Teams work on the Pre-Campaign Strategy
• March 13 - Teams submit the Pre-Campaign Strategy to instructor, client, and Google
• March 24 to April 13 - The Competition Window. During the 3-week competition window, teams implement their proposed campaign strategy, review their results frequently, run reports, and adjust the campaigns as necessary.
• April 13 to April 23, - Teams work on the Post-Campaign Summary.
• April 24 - Teams submit the Post-Campaign Summary to instructor, client, and Google.
